Workshop purpose:

Developing our hearts alongside our bodies can be a potent combination.  Developing flexibility in both the physical and emotional aspects of our lives offers complimentary benefits and learnings.  A gendered approach to the body and heart offers a direct, tailored, no-nonsense approach.  Men have always learned from other men.  Mature empathic and empowering behaviours can be learned in groups of men, just as immature, negative habits unconsciously manifest in both our hearts and our bodies through group experience.  A conscious, considered, and facilitated body and heart training setting enables participants to co-create their own new vision for what it is to be a Man in the modern era in their intimate relationships and in relationship with themselves.  This can also be great preparation for getting into relationship as a single man.

Our body and heart training addresses five key areas for men: isolation and loneliness, relationships, visions of masculinity, absent fathers, and self-care.

For the Body…

Self-Care

Based on ‘The 123 Approach to Fitness’ which is an integrative self-help guide that promotes a healthier mindset towards fitness. Trialled and developed on West Ham United FC and the Royal Ballet School, Author, Arran Knight will help you discover new thought processes and exercise strategies that athletes and elite dancers utilise to keep themselves in top shape.  Using Strength, stretching & release methods, our Body and Heart training will provide you with the tools and skills to apply the 123 Approach and its models to any chosen activity. In a step-by-step process, you will become equipped to keep yourself injury free and in optimally functional condition whilst exercising and when going about your daily life.

For the Heart…

Isolation

A recent piece of research by Kings College reported that “severely isolated older men were no more likely to record a score of lonely than the rest of the men in the dataset, but severely isolated older women were over 700% more likely to record a score of lonely.  Research indicates that men’s loneliness has a significant impact on their mental and physical health, with loneliness being linked to increased risks of depression, cardiovascular disease, and even death.  Groups mitigate habitual male tendencies towards isolation and loneliness.

Relationships

Women tend to report experiencing and expressing a wider range of emotions more frequently than men.  Research suggests that women tend to be more emotionally mature in their relationships, demonstrating better relationship adjustment and psychological well-being.  Facilitated men’s groups can be a change-engine for men in intimate relationships.  Men learn to listen in group settings.  They also learn to be with their own feelings in a structured communal setting.

Masculinity

Studies indicate that a negative view of masculinity is linked to poorer mental wellbeing in men.  Facilitated men’s groups are ideally suited to young men who are searching for a different experience of masculinity than the ‘toxicity’ that the media puts out.  Supported by Therapeutic Men’s Work, men can challenge patterns of dominant or defensive masculinity to become a force for social change in their own communities.

Absent Fathers

Research in the UK consistently shows that a father’s absence can have negative impacts on children, particularly in relation to their mental health, behaviour, and development.  Many males grow up with inadequate contact from their fathers and this affects their own masculinity, building in a sense of distance.  What men missed in their own fathers they may find in other men; they may then be able to ‘re-programme’ their internal lack through contact with other men in groups.

Who is it for?

This workshop is open to Men who are interested in learning more about their bodies and hearts.  It is also open to therapists and counsellors in training.

Learning outcomes:

The Common results in our trainings are that the men in them:

  • Feel more connected to other Men

  • Feel an increased level of support in their lives

  • Have a place where they feel accountable for themselves and their decisions

  • Actively explore their relationship with their fathers

  • Report improvements in their relationships and their experience of competency in them

  • Feel a stronger sense of their identity as a man as something they can align with

  • Improve their exercise habits and motivation

  • Improve their physical self-image

  • Develop their localised strength and flexibility

  • Feel more ease and freer movements in their bodies

  • Learn to understand how to manage tension in their bodies

What to expect?

The workshop will be held in-person at the St Patricks Studios and participants will:

  • Experience a welcoming environment

  • Hear other men’s stories

  • Learn some theory that might help with realigning with a male identity

  • Learn theory and exercises to help with their body

  • Experience male related exercises and meditations

  • Have time for any questions and interaction with the facilitator

Our approach:

Psychosynthesis as applied to psychotherapy is a unique approach that combines both psychology and spirituality. It is a holistic process that helps the individual deal with patterns of behaviours which inhibit or prevent living life in meaningful and fulfilling ways. It brings us into contact with the life journey to meaning and purpose.

A Gendered perspective promotes realistic change in the everyday lives of men, women and families in areas that really matter, and which are least understood and sometimes hard to manage without informed support. The centre the facilitator trained at is at the cutting edge of researching a full spectrum understanding of gender, relationship, and sexuality.

The 123 Approach to Fitness promotes a healthier mindset towards fitness where you will discover new thought processes and exercise strategies that athletes and elite dancers utilise to keep themselves in top shape.  This step-by-step process will help you become equipped to keep yourself injury free and in optimally functional condition whilst exercising and when going about your daily life.
